Cleaning Your Freshette

How to Clean Your Freshette Funnel & Tube

Rinse your Freshette with water after each use. In addition, we recommend washing your Freshette twice a day when possible - morning and evening.

We realize following the below steps will not always be feasible based on the many conditions in which you are using the Freshette.

General rule of thumb: Wash your Freshette as frequently as conditions allow.

Leave No Trace: When washing, carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amounts of biodegradable soap.

You’ll need:

  • Clean washcloth
  • Clean towels (can be paper)
  • Mild soap
  • Warm water

Then, you can follow these six steps:

  1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds, then rinse. Dry your hands with a towel. Use that same towel to turn off the faucet.
  2. Remove the tube from the funnel. Use a soapy washcloth to wipe the inside and outside of the funnel. Start from the wide part of the funnel, wiping down toward the spout. Then, wipe/rinse the inside and outside of the tube with soapy water. Shake the tube to remove excess water.
  3. Use a soapy washcloth to clean the area around your body where the funnel makes contact.
  4. Rinse off any soap, then pat yourself and the funnel and tube dry with clean towels. Let the inside of the tube air dry.
  5. Don’t use the washcloth or towels again until you’ve cleaned them. Discard the towels if using paper.
  6. Wash your hands again.

Tips:

  • If mild soap isn’t available, you can either boil the funnel and tube for 2-3 minutes or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to clean your hands and your Freshette - thoroughly covering your hands and surfaces with sanitizer, rubbing until dry. Then, wash with warm soapy water when it is accessible.
  • Washing your Freshette while you shower might offer another convenient solution.
  • Check the tube periodically for kinks that keep pee from flowing out freely.
  • Always wash your hands before and after touching the Freshette.

How to Clean the Freshette Reusable Storage Pouch

On a daily basis, wipe the Freshette pouch with alcohol-based sanitizing wipes. Thoroughly cover surfaces with sanitizer, rubbing until dry. Then, wash the pouch as often as possible.

We realize following the below steps will not always be feasible based on the many conditions in which you are using the Freshette and pouch.

General rule of thumb: Clean the pouch as frequently as conditions allow. In the backcountry, wash away from natural water sources.

You’ll need:

  • Clean towels (can be paper)
  • Mild liquid soap
  • Cool water
  • White vinegar

Then, you can follow these six steps:

  1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Rub your hands together for at least 20 seconds, then rinse. Dry your hands with a towel. Use that same towel to turn off the faucet.
  2. Wash the inside of the pouch with soap and warm water (hot water may damage the pouch).
  3. Rinse the pouch with cool water to get all the soap out.
  4. Mix ½ cup cool water and ½ cup white vinegar. Fill the pouch halfway with the vinegar solution, then shake. Let the pouch sit for 15 to 30 minutes.
  5. Empty the pouch and rinse it with cool water. Hang the pouch to let it dry.
  6. Wash your hands again.

We recommend replacing the pouch when it shows signs of tearing or excessive wear. Replacement bags are available here.
